Publ.Date : Sat, 02 Aug 2008 21:56:02 GMT The Bank Job [Blu-ray] + Digital Copy A cheerful, energetic, and completely entertaining movie, The Bank Job follows some small-time hoods who think they've lucked into a big-time opportunity when they learn a bank's security system will be temporarily suspended--little suspecting that they're being manipulated by government agents for their own ends. The result is that the movie doubles its pleasures: While the robbery itself has the usual suspense of a heist film, when the robbery is over the hoods find themselves being hunted by the police, the government, and brutal criminal kingpins who were storing dangerous information in a safety deposit box. The Bank Job won't win any awards, but it's enormously fun. Director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Species) propels the action along with vigor, editing zippily with perfect clarity among multiple storylines and various colorful characters. Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter), as the leader of the bank robbers, successfully steps away from his usual bone-crunching roles to a more human presence. The rest of the cast--including Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea), Keeley Hawes (Tipping the Velvet), David Suchet (Poirot), and many faces familiar from British film and television--give their characters the right degree of personality and flavor without getting fussy or detracting from the headlong rush of the story. A little sex, a lot of action, a sly sense of humor, and a twisty plot; if more movies had these basic pleasures, the world would be a happier place. --Bret Fetzer Stills from Bank Job (click for larger image)
Customer Review: Thin I was all hyped up to watch this movie. I read on some forum that I should go home and prepare to watch a fantastic movie. I bought the Blu-ray disc (BD) on Amazon and a couple of days later it arrived. Made dinner settled into my chair, fired up my 7.1 home theater and was unimpressed. I don't mind heavy British accents when the movie is good enough to put it aside. An example would be "The Full Monte" or Harry Potter, but this movie was lame. I don't care if it was based on a true story. The Great Escape was based on a true story and it was great. The execution of putting it down to film, the telling of the story if you will, was thin to say the least. The film maker attempts to peak your willingness to watch this flick with early on sexual scenes and with euro strip club, semi naked ladies in the backround as part of the area of operation. Did not work for me. The story doddles along until after a string of boring acts of implementation of the plan straining to come to a peak. It then turns to a semi who gets who first exercise, and then ends. Thank goodness. It is now one of my "I only watched it one time" BD's in my collection. For me it was a waste of money. The guy needed a shave too. You know how many Europeans have a particular odor when your standing next to them? This movie had the same smell. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh Customer Review: Amazing The older Disney movie's were and are my favorites. This version of Snow White is vibrant and beautiful - the movie has never looked better. Like most Disney DVDs that come and go in their releases it can be sometimes hard to find, so make sure to get the DVD when you can. A three-hour battery charger and a carrying case are included. --Jon Groebner Customer Review: A Handy Grooming Tool I've used the Dremel 770 to maintain my dog's nails for several months now and he quickly learned to (finally) relax! I accidentally hit the quick on a nail (with dog clippers) eight years ago and he would never come when it was time to do his nails after that . . . up 'til now. This tool spins fast! One careless slip and you've ripped out some fur, so you need to remain TOTALLY focused and Fido needs to keep real still. I rotary file his nails (on low) outdoors when the wind is blowing slightly to reduce our inhaling the shavings, and it's easier to see the vein in the nail outdoors in the sunlight. I lay my pet on his back and trim any long fur between his toes first so it can't get caught. After partially covering his face I hold the unit firmly and grind with light strokes, keeping it moving, and doing a second nail intermittently so nail heat won't build up and he doesn't know what's coming next! Ha-ha! Once you get the hang of it, it is quick and easy to get the job done but always take your time! According to one reviewer, a podiatrist uses this tool in his office to sand rough heels so I decided to try it on my (ceramic-floors) calloused feet. It only took a few minutes and worked like a charm! I buffed my toenails too! Again, keep this unit moving and watch the pressure in more tender areas so you don't end up burning your arches or the sides (edges) or removing too many protective layers that would make your feet feel sore. So two great uses so far--saving both time and grooming expenses! In capable hands, I recommend this product!!! Publ.Date : Sat, 02 Aug 2008 21:56:02 GMT Mating Game Customer Review: A crash course on taxing theoryIn fact I am not under 13 -it's just that I happen to have an old computer and the new protocols' rampant paranoia is simply preventing me from openly and honestly expressing my views. {To the site administrators: as the famous 'Rebel Without A Cause' quote goes, "You read too many comics!"...} Now let's go straight to the point of it: Most laypeople have polarized views about taxes -they either disregard the whole matter or become paralyzed by their fear of what they perceive as a Kafkian chaos. 'Mating Game' should be adopted as an introductory exercise by high-school and IRS extension courses since it gives revealing insight on the rationale behind general taxing theory and procedures, as well as their articulation with the whole of the legal system (federal and otherwise jurisdictional). Publ.Date : Sat, 02 Aug 2008 21:56:02 GMT 21 (Single-Disc Edition) An unconvincing exercise in moral complexity, 21 is based on Ben Mezrich's book Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions. Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe) plays brilliant, blue-collar scholar Ben Campbell, whose doubts that he'll win a scholarship to Harvard Medical School compel him to join a secret, M.I.T. gang of math whiz kids. Under the silky but chilling command of a math professor (Kevin Spacey), Jim and the others master card counting, i.e., the statistical analysis of cards dealt in blackjack games. The team lives a humdrum existence during the week, but on weekends in Sin City, the students are rolling in cash, going to exclusive clubs, and feeling on top of the world. (Ben even gets the girl: a comely, fellow counter played by Kate Bosworth.) Despite all that success, Ben feels ethically compromised, and indeed director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde), in the old tradition of American movies, plays it both ways where fun vices are concerned. On the one hand, it feels so good; on the other, ahem, we know it's wrong. That studied ambivalence proves wearing after a while, making the most interesting character in the film a casino watchdog played by Laurence Fishburne. A master at reading the emotions of gamblers beating the house with a scam, he's admirable for being good at his job, but repellent for wrecking the faces of counters in casino dungeons. He's all about moral complexity in the tradition of anti-heroes, and a truly provocative element in an otherwise superficial movie. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: Fun night in How can you not like a movie with Kevin Spacey??? I liked how this built up not only to recruiting of the students, but also to realization of what's important to them. Kevin Spacey is conniving in his supporting role and makes me remember his line from a previous time "I rule!" I enjoyed the performances and although the storyline was rushed at times, it was still good for relaxing entertainment. Publ.Date : Sat, 02 Aug 2008 21:56:02 GMT |
